The Basics of Turf Infill

 By: Emeline Rodger

What Exactly is Infill?

Infill is a necessary part of installing an artificial turf field. It adds cushion and support while protecting the athletes who will be using it. There are three things to look for in an infill:

  • Durability

  • Shock Absorption

  • Stability

There are a few different types of infills which can range in price and specific use. They all have their own positives and negatives.

Crumb Rubber

This is the most common type of infill used for athletic fields. It is made from old tires that are shredded into small particles which are then rounded out until they are smooth. Crumb rubber absorbs shock well and has the best price for any shock absorbing infill.

Silica Sand

This is most often used in combination with other types of infills. It is made from tiny, rounded quartz granules. It is by far the most inexpensive of the types. It is one of the better infills for stability as it weighs down the turf to prevent it from moving or wrinkling in the future.

EPDM

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. It is a virgin rubber alternative to crumb rubber. It also reduces shock like crumb rubber but it is usually of higher quality. This does mean that it is more expensive than traditional crumb rubber.

BrockFILL™

This is a specifically engineered infill made of a type of pine. It is quite sustainable and completely organic. It has many beneficial properties. It is durable, it reduces the heat on the turf, and it provides good traction.

These are just four of the main types of turf infills. There are other types that are similar to these four main types, they are just slightly adapted. For more information, check out this site. Overall, each type has its benefits, it’s just a matter of choosing which one is best for you and your needs. Deciding on what type of infill to use for your artificial turf field can be challenging. With our help, the choice is easy. Go out and find the best turf infill for you!
